Time Calculator
Add or subtract hours and minutes and get the total in hours and minutes, in decimal hours and in minutes.
How to add hours and minutes
- Add the minutes together, and add the hours together.
- Every 60 minutes becomes 1 hour. Move those hours across to the hours total.
- Whatever is left under 60 is the minutes.
Example: 2 hours 45 minutes + 3 hours 30 minutes. Hours: 2 + 3 = 5. Minutes: 45 + 30 = 75, which is 1 hour 15 minutes. Total: 6 hours 15 minutes (6.25 decimal hours).
How to subtract hours and minutes
Turn each time into minutes, subtract, and turn the answer back into hours and minutes. 8 hours 30 minutes minus 45 minutes is 510 − 45 = 465 minutes = 7 hours 45 minutes.
Use it to calculate time for a timesheet
This free time calculator works as a simple work time calculator when you already know how long each shift or task lasted. Add each day's hours as a row to total the week, and use Subtract for an unpaid break. For example, 8:30 + 7:45 − 0:30 = 15 hours 45 minutes.
If you have the clock in and clock out times instead, the time card calculator works out each day for you, with overtime and pay. To change the total into decimal hours for payroll, use the decimal hours shown here or the hours to decimal calculator. To change minutes into hours, use the minutes to hours calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add hours and minutes together?
Add the hours, add the minutes, then turn every 60 minutes into 1 hour. 1:50 + 2:25 gives 3 hours 75 minutes, which is 4 hours 15 minutes.
How do I subtract time?
Convert both times to minutes, subtract the smaller from the larger, then convert back. 5:10 minus 2:40 is 310 − 160 = 150 minutes = 2 hours 30 minutes.
How do I turn the total into decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 15 hours 45 minutes is 15 + 45 ÷ 60 = 15.75 hours. The calculator shows this for you.
Can I use it to total a timesheet?
Yes. Add one row for each day's hours and use Subtract for unpaid breaks. If you only have clock in and out times, use the time card calculator instead.
What happens if I subtract more than I add?
The total shows as negative, for example -1 h 30 min, so you can see you took away more time than you added.
