How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × overtime multiplier. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), covered non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek.
Example: Jordan earns $20 an hour and works 46.5 hours. Regular pay: 40 × $20 = $800. Overtime rate: $20 × 1.5 = $30 an hour. Overtime pay: 6.5 × $30 = $195. Total gross pay: $995.00.

Federal vs state overtime rules
Federal law only counts hours over 40 in a week; it has no daily overtime. Some states go further. California, for example, pays 1.5x after 8 hours in a day and 2x after 12 hours in a day, as well as weekly overtime. If your state has daily rules, enter your daily overtime and double-time hours separately.
Salaried employees who meet the exempt tests (for example many managers and professionals) are not owed overtime under federal law.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27 an hour. Then multiply by the number of overtime hours.
How many hours is overtime?
Under federal law, any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. Some states, such as California, also count hours over 8 in a day.
Is overtime calculated weekly or biweekly?
Weekly. Each workweek stands alone, so you cannot average two weeks. Working 45 hours one week and 35 the next still earns 5 hours of overtime.
What is double time?
Double time is 2 times the regular rate. Federal law does not require it, but some states (such as California, after 12 hours in a day) and some employers or union contracts do.
Does paid time off count toward overtime?
Under federal law, overtime is based on hours actually worked, so holidays, vacation and sick days usually do not count toward the 40 hours, unless your employer's policy says otherwise.
Are salaried employees paid overtime?
Only if they are non-exempt. Employees who meet the federal salary and duties tests for exempt status are not owed overtime under the FLSA.
